Ebbene si! Dopo i sostanziali cambiamenti già annunciati da Ubuntu e Canonical (vedi il boot di 10s, e l’esclusione :sigh di gimp dai software preinstallati)… Firefox, in Lucid Lynx, partirà con Yahoo come motore di ricerca predefinito!

I am writing to apprise you of two small but important changes coming to
Firefox in Lucid. I have asked the desktop team to start preparing
these changes to make them available in Lucid as soon as reasonably
possible. Probably on the order of weeks.

Change #1
In Lucid, the default home page will respect the search provider
settings that you have set in the “Chrome”. (The “Chrome” is Mozilla’s
term for the little search box to the upper right, reachable by
control-K, for instance). For Lucid, this will definitely work for
switching between Google and Yahoo!, we don’t yet know what other
providers will be in scope for Lucid. If a user has Google set as their
search provider,they will have exactly the experience they do today. If
they switch to Yahoo!, the default home page will switch to using a
Yahoo! search. If they switch back to Google, the default home page will
switch back to using the Google search, exactly like today. Searching
from Chrome will continue to work exactly as it does today.

Change #2
Change #2 is changing the default search provider in Firefox to Yahoo!
Note that this won’t in any way effect the ability of a user to choose
and use the search provider of their choice. It’s literally 2 easily
discoverable clicks to change this setting, a simple matter of switching
to that search provider in the chrome by clicking on the icon and
choosing the desired provider. Note also that Yahoo! does not share any
personally identifiable or usage information.

Why?
I am pursuing this change because Canonical has negotiated a revenue
sharing deal with Yahoo! and this revenue will help Canonical to provide
developers and resources to continue the open development of Ubuntu and
the Ubuntu Platform. This change will help provide these resources as
well as continuing to respect our user’s default search across Firefox.

Vi scrivo per rendervi partecipi di due piccoli ma importanti cambiamenti che riguardano Firefox in Lucid. Ho chiesto al team di iniziare a preparare questi cambiamenti,in modo da renderli disponibili in Lucid appena possibile. Probabilmente tra qualche settimana.

Cambiamento n.1:
In Lucid, l’home page di default rispetterà il provider di ricerca impostato in “Chrome” (“Chrome” è il termine di Mozilla con cui si definisce il piccolo campo di ricerca in alto a destra, raggiungibile premendo ctrl-k). Sicuramente questa feature lavorerà sia per Google che per Yahoo, ma non sappiamo ancora se saranno disponibili altri providers in Lucid. Se un utente ha Google come provider di ricerca predefinito, le cose resteranno esattamente come sono oggi. Invece, se (il Chrome) cambia a Yahoo!, l’home page di default userà la ricerca Yahoo!. Ritornando a Google (nel Chrome), l’home page userà di nuovo la ricerca Google,esattamente come oggi. La ricerca dal “Chrome” resterà esattamente la stessa.

Cambiamento n.2
Il provider di ricerca predefinito, in Firefox, sarà Yahoo!. Questo però non impedirà agli utenti di scegliere e usare il provider di ricerca che preferiscono. Letteralmente, in due semplici clicks si potrà modificare quest’impostazione, questione di modificare il provider di ricerca nel “Chrome” clickando sull’icona e scegliendo il provider desiderato. Si noti altresì che Yahoo! non condivide informazioni personali,o informazioni riguardo alle operazioni.

Perchè?
Metterò in atto questo cambiamento perchè Canonical ha concordato con Yahoo! degli introiti per questo, e questi introiti serviranno per gli sviluppatori, e per le risorse, in modo che lo sviluppo di Ubuntu e la piattaforma Ubuntu restino open. Questo cambiamento ci fornirà queste risorse, rispettando comunque la scelta dell’utente per le sue ricerche in Firefox.
